Following on from the success of 2024, we are fortunate indeed to once again have Stephen Michalak as guest speaker this year, bringing his many years of involvement and senior experience in SA Freemasonry as a lecturer, masonic student and past Grand Master of SA and the NT.
A gifted speaker and presenter, he is best qualified to explain to the uninitiated the features of the Masonic movement, of the Masonic lodge room and of the officers who man it and conduct the meetings, as well as the wider involvement freemasonry quietly undertakes throughout the community.
Freemasonry is steeped in history. Founded over 300 years ago to provide a tolerant space for men to contemplate and discuss the meanings of things philosophical as well as empirical. Stephen will explain how this is done - free from political or religious argument and buttressed by brotherhood and equality.
The Annual Blackwood Lodge Open Night is open to all members of the public. We ask only that you RSVP (for catering), dress neatly but informally and are punctual so that you can be included. You are welcome to bring a friend or family member.
As a guest of the lodge we hope you will find it most enlightening and comfortable. Those interested in discovering freemasonry for the future will have many questions answered and opportunity to ask more and will discover why Freemasonry is not a jovial lunch club or community service club.
There will be some historical artefacts on display, and some takeaway information.
Following the presentation, be part of a demonstration of our toasts to King and Craft and join us for supper, a drink and a coffee in the ante-room with the opportunity to meet members and ask questions.

This is an information night for interested members of the public, not just men. Freemasonry as a rule is very cautious when considering new members. It does not seek every man, but rather the men who are themselves seekers. Seekers of truth and seekers of values. Seekers of self betterment. Members are required to be good men and true, believe in a supreme being, self development and serving their community. Each man is required to pass a police check.
Future members tend to approach us rather than the reverse so we like to inform them in advance - in their interests as much as ours. Hence the Open Night.
If you are curious to learn more about Freemasonry or are considering applying for membership, we warmly invite you to attend, so that we can assist you with the right information which may or may not lead you to make an expression of interest.
At Blackwood Lodge our membership criteria is based on quality rather than quantity.
It’s the perfect opportunity to meet the members, explore the values we stand for, and discover what this centuries-old fraternity offers in today’s uncertain world.
The Open Night will be held on Wednesday 3rd September 2025 in the Masonic Hall at 229 Main Rd Blackwood. There is some parking in Main Road and behind the Yangtze Chinese restaurant or CPAP shop. Please plan to arrive by 7:15pm as the presentation begins at 7:30pm sharp upstairs.
As much as Freemasonry is built on ritual and symbolism, it is also deeply rooted in service, compassion, and community care. The members of Blackwood Lodge No. 93 are not just part of a fraternity — they are your neighbours, your volunteers, your supporters; and they look forward to meeting you on the 3rd September.
